Someone from Meta alluded to it the other day, and apparently there will be some talk about exactly what their strategy is with all this at Meta Connect (in September), but it totally looks like some sort of defensive moat. Rather like how Google gave away Android as part of the effort to stop Windows Phone. The community has absolutely run far further with all the various models than I think anyone thought reasonably possible, and at least I am phenomenally grateful that this entire episode has not pushed us over into absolute cloud dependency, even if it all started in deeply confused circumstances.
