Apple security boss faces iPads-for-gun-permits bribery charge again

- bhaney 3y agoI'm glad I actually read the whole article, because it paints a very different than the title and intro to someone who wasn't aware of this case until now. I thought it was kind of weird that someone would feel the need to bribe a sheriff's office instead of filling out some paperwork normally and paying a nominal fee. Turns out the sheriff's office was (allegedly) refusing to issue licenses unless they were given a substantial donation? That's not bribery in my book, it's extortion, and the headline should reflect that.
- Rebelgecko 3y agoThe incident happened pre-Bruen when California county sheriffs had a huge amount of latitude to decide who got permits. In some counties that meant nearly everyone without a criminal record got one, but on the flip side in some counties the only sure way to get a CCW was to be politically connected (either a colleague of the sheriff or donor to their reelection campaign). So if a given sheriff's default stance is "no one gets a CCW" I can see how it's more of a bribe than extortion to get one via quid pro quo
