Running Windows 11 now, and for the first time ever I'm seriously considering running some flavour of Linux with a separate windows partition for games.
The amount of crap they are constantly shovelling down your throat is jaw-dropping. Add in the growing UI inconsistencies, options I turn off re-appearing after every 'feature update' and its just not worth it.
Also, not sure if I'm running on the beta channel right now, but damn is the thing unstable as anything, opening task manager takes FOREVER, explorer is incredibly slow and crashes frequently.
- askonomm 3y agoYeah, totally agree - but I've tried a ton of different distros, and the UI inconsistencies are there as well, the fractional scaling support (or lack thereof) is much worse than on Windows, Gnome feels like it's made with CSS and JavaScript or something, and doesn't feel very "fluent" whereas KDE is clearly not touched by any professional designers. Then the apps look absolutely horrid (e.g Electron apps in Gnome), and if you use fractional scaling, everything is blurry. I'm afraid the grass isn't greener on the other side. Yeah, you get UNIX niceties, but as far as a daily-driver desktop, I could tolerate Linux even less than Windows. Seems like I should just go back to overpaying and to Apple.
- Dennip 3y agoHonestly this is what has always dragged me back to Windows when i've tried in the past; things don't look nice, and no matter how many times you see the "text is good now" posts, text never looks as crisp to me as windows or macOS.
- coffeeling 3y agoGNOME is made with JavaScript. Not the app windows, but GNOME Shell is mostly JS.
- askonomm 3y agoWait, so the Shell is a web browser? Jesus, no wonder it feels clunky and non-native.
