It depends on the charge curve more than the size of the battery. With a bigger battery you can pull more kilowatts to maintain the curve without stressing the battery chemistry.
The Hummer EV's charge curve is quite conservative for the size of its battery. It can pull 350 kW at low states of charge but slows down quite a bit after 65%.
Big batteries are a reality of practical EVs. Chargers still outperform batteries for the most part but faster chargers are needed. European charging networks are deploying 400 kW chargers these days for passenger vehicles. And the EU wants 600 kW to be the standard deployment by 2028:

Megawatt Charging System chargers are coming for heavy vehicles for up to 3.75 megawatt charging:

This Volvo FM truck can pull 350 kW at lower states of charge and still pulls 243 kW at 89%:

It'd probably be able to make full use of 400 kW chargers too.
- PaulHoule 3y agoIf you're using a slow charger it is limited by the charger and not the battery. Fast chargers are coming but if you're buying a vehicle now and take road trips it will be challenging in the next few years. The CEO of Ford tried doing a road trip with the F-150 EV and struggled to charge it https://jalopnik.com/ford-ceo-jim-farley-f-150-lightning-reality-check-1850739591 https://jalopnik.com/ford-ceo-jim-farley-f-150-lightning-rea... That F150 is great at towing but boy does it kill the range. My wife runs a riding academy and many people in our business (not us) own a large vehicle that they use to trailer horses to shows that are 50-100 miles away. (Alternately we hire somebody maybe every three years to haul us a horse from a 200 mile radius, once we thought about getting one from a little further away in Ontario.) That's going to be challenging and I think it will be a while before you see good charging infrastructure at show barns.
- clouddrover 3y agoYes, it's true that North American charging infrastructure is backward and primitive. North America is still struggling to standardize on something as simple as what plug to use.
- PaulHoule 3y agoIt looks like that is going in the right direction but it seems like "cost disease" for everything except XXL bathrooms in McMansions in Arizona is a reason why we can't have nice things in America.
