I’d love for this to come to the US, but I’d have a hard time switching because of iMessage. If you care about e2e encrypted messaging in the US, running an iPhone is really your only option. It’s a shame.
- esel2k 3y agoIs WhatsApp not common in the US? Here its the number 1 application but even without SMS is mostly unlimited free in all subscriptions.
- skepticATX 3y agoIt's not uncommon, but it's likely that the majority of people you communicate with will not actively use WhatsApp. iMessage truly is dominate, especially among younger people who lean towards iPhone even more.
- abwizz 3y agocounterpoint from a euro, born around when linux came out. using an iphone for 5y+ and have never recieved or sent an imessage.
- dsauerbrun 3y agoI thought rcs provides this and is supposed to be a better alternative than iMessage... am I mistaken?
- skepticATX 3y agoIt does, but the majority of people in the US use iPhones so unless Apple decides to support it, it's somewhat irrelevant.
- Moldoteck 3y agoAfaik beeper app can work with iMessage no problem. They use a stack of iphones to provide this feature so you may want to check it
- yaky 3y agoSignal, WhatsApp, Matrix, XMPP all support E2EE. You can even host your own server for Matrix and XMPP. In my experience, much more difficult problem is convincing people to install one of those to communicate with you. Network effects and the power of defaults and all.
- skepticATX 3y agoYeah, that is what I mean. I have my own Matrix server and also use Signal, but the majority of people that I communicate with either use SMS (usually unknowingly) because they are on Android, or use iMessage.
- 2OEH8eoCRo0 3y agoNot to pick on you specifically but HN sure has a way to dismiss "principle" over the tiniest of nitpicks. Apple could be murdering puppies but man, their touchpad is just 2% more pleasant than the competition, sorry! My hands are tied!
