People seem to be forgetting that in the first few years of Kaggle, R was the language of choice, not Python. That changed very fast once deep learning arrived on the scene. Plus the Python ecosystem kept getting better. Google/tensorflow/python was the final nail in the coffin, and the ecosystem had irreversibly shifted to Python.
