Climate-changing human activity could lead to 1B deaths over the next century

- mrkeen 3y ago> 'Planet will be uninhabitable for billions of people' by 2050 without change, claims former Australian PM, Malcolm Turnbull. His party was in power and repealed the carbon tax mid-2014. He became the leader of that party (and prime minister) 2015-2018.

- myshpa 3y agoThat's another problem that could be solved by switching to plant-based diets :) https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30634559/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30634559/ Plant-Based Diets for Cardiovascular Safety and Performance in Endurance Sports https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1050173818300240 https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S10501... Plant-based diets, defined in terms of varying degrees of restrictions on animal food consumption, have been associated with lower risk of cardiovascular diseases as well as an improved cardiovascular risk profile. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34805312/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34805312/ These findings highlight the favorable role of healthful plant-based foods in reducing cardiovascular mortality and CVD. https://www.heart.org/en/news/2021/08/04/eating-a-plant-based-diet-at-any-age-may-lower-cardiovascular-risk https://www.heart.org/en/news/2021/08/04/eating-a-plant-base... Eating a plant-based diet at any age may lower cardiovascular risk
- improv 3y agoIndeed, it seems like an easy problem on paper, but the problem is only growing worse. Why is that? I find it curious that the climate change issue gets far more attention than the ever increasing, far more lethal and imminently threatening epidemics of chronic disease
- mrkeen 3y agoThe key difference is: if you are concerned about your heart, you can diet and exercise better - today. Epidemiolists can and should study heart disease as a public health issue, but as a individual health issue, the solution has been discovered and is available to almost everyone.
- myshpa 3y ago> the problem is only growing worse. Why is that? We are consuming more and more of these products due to subsidies and poor policies. Our actions are leading to deforestation of rainforests, the depletion of wildlife, and a decline in biodiversity, all for the sake of our burgers. > I find it curious that the climate change issue gets far more attention than the ever increasing, far more lethal and imminently threatening epidemics of chronic disease Climate change is just a single symptom of the overshoot of the carrying capacity of the environment. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecological_overshoot https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecological_overshoot https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrying_capacity https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrying_capacity Animal agriculture is a primary driver of deforestation and biodiversity loss. Additionally, it contributes to chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes. Climate change and overshoot are far more lethal than CVD. They have the potential to eradicate over 75+% of all animal species, and with the helpful assistance of a nuclear state power, might even threaten our own existence. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocene_extinction https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocene_extinction
