The way this question is phrased has changed, during my lifetime, from "Did God create the universe, or was there a big bang?" to "Is the universe the result of chance or of intelligent design" to "are we living in a simulation". And now it's changing again.
The vocabulary in which the question is phrased changes according to the current parlance of our times, but it's always the same question. And it will always keep being asked, because we don't like the answer: we've known since at least Democritus that we're just dust in the wind.
