For those who haven't tried, Google Play Books is really good. It's free, cross-platform (plus web), you can upload epub, and syncs annotations across devices.
I switched from jailbroken Kindle to android e-ink device 3 years ago and I haven't looked back. It's the perfect combo.
Tip: Use Calibre to organize/backup your books and convert to epub
- jesterson 3y agoIf only they wouldn't snoop/monetise what they can see.
- danielbln 3y agoOr shut it down and throw it onto the graveyard on a whim.
- arglebargle123 3y agoYou can always dump your licenses from the web interface, pull down the books with the Adobe fulfillment software and then strip the DRM using calibre.
- Dah00n 3y agoFUD.
- ghusbands 3y agoIt seems like a reasonable worry. Google Play Music was shut down, as have been so many Google services over time.
- anon____ 3y agoWikipedia lists 61 of them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Discontinued_Google_services https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Discontinued_Google_s....
- xNeil 3y agosure, but what percentage of their products have they shut down?
- anon____ 3y agoJudging from this other, possibly incomplete list, most of them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Google_products https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Google_products
- john-radio 3y agoThe problem with that reasoning is, it's not like Google is rolling a percentile die. They shut down projects that don't pay stockholder dividends, no matter how popular or widely used those projects are. So...
- freedomben 3y ago"shut down" seems a little strong since it was replaced with Youtube Music. For most users it was a UI change but otherwise they didn't even notice. This is very different from other products that were actually shut down where they just turned them off.
- ghusbands 3y agoI had purchased music from them, none of which is now available to me, apart from what I downloaded.
- microflash 3y agoI think there are limits of file size and number of files that you can upload to Google Play Books making it impractical for my vast library.
- charleshan 3y ago100mb per file and supports 1000s of files. I keep long blog posts that I converted into epub in another account so that I'm less likely to hit the limits. You can switch accounts with two clicks
- baxuz 3y agoHow do you read it on the web? I don't see a web client anywhere. The only thing I can find is https://play.google.com/books/notavailable https://play.google.com/books/notavailable
- goosedragons 3y agoJust go to play.google.com/books/ If you're logged in and have books uploaded/purchased you should see them and be able to read them when you click on a title.
- jxdxbx 3y agoYeah, it's also a better mobile app (at least in terms of not wasting screen real estate) than Apple Books on iOS. However some percentage of books I try to upload just give me an error and the app and web app rarely get any love.
- tiltowait 3y agoApple Books would easily be the best eBook app if it had smaller (or customizable) margins. It's been a common request for years. Maddening.
- jxdxbx 3y agoYeah. Margins are an important part of typography, but the "margins" of my phone include a bit of black bezel and some leather case. So text can get closer to the edges of the screen. And wasting phone screen real estate on the title or chapter name on each page is annoying. I'd rather have three extra lines of text.
- charleshan 3y agoYou can fix the epub error by converting "epub to epub" in Calibre
