i actually just finished making a epaper reader from a waveshare 4.2 display and a esp32. very primitive but works so good. it uses grayscale bmps that i create through calibre so fonts are great and i dump in a sd card that goes in the display. the esp just manages the sleep of the display and the displaying the correct image. with the battery switch that i have, it can last months
