Ironically, I'm currently interviewing for a job at a high-frequency trading firm! I happen to be one of those altruistic weirdos who donates a substantial fraction of their wealth to effective charities, and it turns out that there are few gigs outside of HFT that will facilitate my ability to "earn to give" to the same extent. I genuinely believe that HFT presents a variety of fun and interesting problems and challenges, and I look forward to it! Still, that doesn't mean that I can't have fun and make bank elsewhere. I repeat: high-frequency trading doesn't need to exist.
