"If the Antarctic Ice Sheet melted entirely, it would raise global sea levels by around 200 feet (60 meters)"
Cool, I live 62 meters above sea level.
It says something that the first three or so sea level rise visualizers I found don't go as high as 60 meters.
- dredmorbius 3y agoMost sea-level-rise visualisers are looking at the next 50--75 years, through about 2100 CE. A total melting of Antarctica is possible, but would take a minimum of 500 years, and quite possibly much longer (thousands of years), though major thresholds such as critical ice shelves melting (and causing sea-level rises of 3+ metres) could occur within decades. <https://www.discovermagazine.com/environment/will-antarctica-melt https://www.discovermagazine.com/environment/will-antarctica...> <https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/article/antarctic-ice-shelves-are-shattering-how-fast-will-seas-rise https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/article/antar...>
- verdverm 3y agoThe earth has oscillated between a snowball and a hot house throughout history[1]. To think that change is something we can stop is unhelpful, we need to, and will, adapt despite the doomers claim that all will end in calamity (they must do this for the clicks) [1] https://www.climate.gov/news-features/climate-qa/whats-coldest-earths-ever-been#:~:text=At%20least%20twice%20between%20750,as%20the%20Neoproterozoic%20Snowball%20Earths https://www.climate.gov/news-features/climate-qa/whats-colde....

- myshpa 3y agoDon't ignore the speed of changes. https://xkcd.com/1732/ https://xkcd.com/1732/
- verdverm 3y agoDoes this apply to our technologies for dealing with climate change?

- myshpa 3y agoI wouldn't be surprised if we see soon those predictions change. https://phys.org/news/2023-04-devastating-greenland-antarctic-ice-sheets.html https://phys.org/news/2023-04-devastating-greenland-antarcti... https://today.uconn.edu/2023/07/greenland-melted-recently-shows-high-risk-of-sea-level-rise-today/ https://today.uconn.edu/2023/07/greenland-melted-recently-sh... https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2022GL101827 https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2022GL10...
