Since climate change is so hard to model it has basically become a synonym for ‘undesirable environmental event.’ This is why things like fires started by power lines are ‘caused by climate change’ and why any research that is related to the environment can be justified by ‘helping solve climate change.’ Like adding ‘machine learning’ to a project, it’s a buzzword that helps raise interest and cash. No rational justification required! Tenuous conjecture is welcome because it is so easy to justify and is so hard to argue.
