I don’t think I have ever seen an air conditioner used outside as depicted in the comic. Is electricity just cheap there or is that a cultural thing?

- anonym29 3y agoEver been to a Top Golf in Texas in the summer?
- nytesky 3y agoIn a dry climate like Egypt you actually more often use evaporative coolers or “swamp coolers”. They generate cool air with way less energy than compressor driven AC. They humidify rather than dehumidify but not enough for discomfort. You use them with open windows to prevent humidity from building up, so an outdoor application perhaps under shade is a logical extension.
- pengaru 3y agoI suspect it's just a sloppy comic. Outdoors like that you'll usually encounter large evaporative coolers which are basically a blower combined with water mister. If it's hot and dry, the mist vanishes by the time the air reaches you, but the air is cooler.
- balaji1 3y ago> I suspect it's just a sloppy comic That's a nice way to put it. And yeah evaporative water coolers and plain fans go a long way in hot climates.
- balaji1 3y agomaybe he means fans? I mean they must have had and still have fans everywhere. Somehow he doesn't mention fans.
- sn41 3y agoThe stadiums in Qatar 2022 were air-conditioned. I guess it should be possible to have outdoor cooling if you throw the heat away from the seating space. In Minneapolis, there used to be outdoor heating for restaurants in the middle of the winter. They used to be pretty warm enough for people to sit outside, no idea how costly it was.

- HarryHirsch 3y agoIn places with dry heat misting fans are a thing. They work remarkably well. Air conditioners in such a climate are wasteful when you have water available and can take advantage of its high enthalpy of vaporization. They are on offer at the Bezos Bazaar (here, e.g.: https://www.amazon.com/-/dp/B0BTD6VPLG https://www.amazon.com/-/dp/B0BTD6VPLG), and with a margarita in hand it's the height of decadence.
