The bonding they used for cardboard binders and the coating they put on folders was different, and pulling that out of a drawer or a bag had a very unique smell to it that hasn't been around for at least a decade. It was a combination of chemical sweetness, vinegar, and wet drywall must. The change to glossy coatings on folders has been the biggest olfactory change out of all because now it just smells like a water bottle if it smells like anything at all.
