Excellent essay.
The problem of not being an NPC is that all the NPCs gang up on you. At least in GTA games you had to enter a cheat code; but out on the net they stick together and sometimes go hunting proactively for others to disagree with. Scripted to encourage emergent behavior, i guess.
- weare138 3y agoI'm sorry but this is a self created and imposed concept. People promoting the NPC trope are just observing known psychological and sociological traits and phenomena but assigning new and scientifically unsound meanings to them that's apparently based on video games? And as an outside observer to this developing internet trope it is somewhat ironic that the people who seem to promote this opinion all seem to be saying and repeating the exact same thing.
- h2odragon 3y agoIts a metaphor, useful for drawing analogies about far more complex realities. All abstractions are in some sense false; this no less than others.
