Ask HN: Has anybody succesfully blocked YouTube's Hero Wars ads?
- indigoabstract 3y agoI'm not looking to block all ads, just this one in particular, as I'm tired of seeing them all the time.. https://twitter.com/dark1x/status/1617906629709811714?lang=en https://twitter.com/dark1x/status/1617906629709811714?lang=e... Telling Google to stop showing me this ad has no effect.
- bediger4000 3y agoSomething's getting worse in the ad industry. A lot of the newsletters I get show ads done by ,"LiveIntent". I started to see the same 3-4 ads repetitively this past winter. Eventually, I clicked on the triangle on the ads to see if I could notify LiveIntent of the repetition. I was getting newsletters with 5 of 5 ads from "Grunt Style" purveying Qanon slogan clothing. I decided I could notify LiveIntent once per newsletter that I was getting bored of Grunt Style ads featuring copyright violations of The Punisher logo. And I assure you I'm not the target demographic for Qanon related merch. LiveIntent must have seen my complaints because the Captcha got harder. Then they refused complaints from gmail.com addresses, popping up a notice about how they required a business email address. An @mail.ru address worked, however. Something's very rotten in online advertising.
- indigoabstract 3y agoYes, it's quite baffling to be repeatedly bombarded with the same ad and no way to make it stop. It feels just like spam did in the old days. It's good that you managed to get the advertiser to stop in your case. Google Ads also has a way to tell it to stop showing a certain ad, but it doesn't work here, either because it's broken or the advertiser found a way to get around it. I thought other people might have ran into this exact problem with YouTube, but it seems, not that many.
- bediger4000 3y agoLiveIntent is pretty clearly a spammer, since they have a farce of a way to contact them, and ignore any such information. I complained to the newsletter senders. I pointed out that Grunt Style was probably not scoring any points with their demographic. I think that's what worked.
