LCDs have patents up the wazoo (OLEDs etc, plenty of new screen techs), it didn't stop them being developed. E-Ink just doesn't ha e any economy of scale, and it hasn't had an easy route toward economy of scale in the future, it's fairly niche in it's use-cases when it's competing with LCDs. If ReMarkable ever adds an app store, I'll eat my RM2*. They suffer from Apple syndrome and it goes against their "digital paper" schtick. *No I won't.
