The fact that climate science was evolving 40 years ago is used to discount all the articles from the 70s that said we were entering a new ice age, so it seems unfair to target Exxon by saying they perfectly understood the science when the New York Times et al gets off the hook by saying they didn’t.
• “The Earth’s Cooling Climate,” Science News, November 15, 1969.• “Colder Winters Held Dawn of New Ice Age,” Washington Post, January 11, 1970.• “Science: Another Ice Age?” Time Magazine, June 24, 1974.• “The Ice Age Cometh!” Science News, March 1, 1975.• “The Cooling World,” Newsweek, April 28, 1975.• “Scientists Ask Why World Climate is Changing; Major Cooling May Be Ahead,” New York Times, May 21, 1975.• “In the Grip of a New Ice Age?” International Wildlife July-August, 1975.• “A Major Cooling Widely Considered to Be Inevitable,” New York Times, September 14, 1975.• “Variations in the Earth’s Orbit, Pacemaker of the Ice Ages,” Science magazine, December 10, 1976.
- mjhay 3y agoThe "new ice age" thing was never anywhere close to a mainstream thing in climate science. The idea that CO2 caused warming was already well-established, and the decade-scale cooling was correctly seen as just a temporary reversion. A lot of that coverage was astroturfed by Exxon et al, precisely to muddy the waters. The media of course was happy to play along.

- demondemidi 3y agoYou literally cut and pasted a bibliography from the first hit on global climate change denial from an organization long associated with corporate propaganda. https://www.washingtonpolicy.org/publications/detail/today-its-global-warming-in-the-70s-it-was-the-coming-ice-age https://www.washingtonpolicy.org/publications/detail/today-i... Nice. Funny thing: I can't seem to find any of those articles, only references to them on other climate denial pages.
- billfor 3y agoTypical dismissing of facts based on the messenger. "Oh they are bad so the point you are making is wrong...." You literally did nothing but superficial search. Obviously google and other search engines want to hide those. That's real corporate propaganda/censorship. Here are the links starting from the beginning: https://www.sciencenews.org/archive/earths-cooling-climate https://www.sciencenews.org/archive/earths-cooling-climate https://web.archive.org/web/20060812025725/http:/time-proxy.yaga.com/time/archive/printout/0,23657,944914,00.html https://web.archive.org/web/20060812025725/http:/time-proxy.... https://www.sciencenews.org/sn-magazine/march-1-1975 https://www.sciencenews.org/sn-magazine/march-1-1975 (cover only) http://www.denisdutton.com/newsweek_coolingworld.pdf http://www.denisdutton.com/newsweek_coolingworld.pdf etc... The fact that so many of the articles have been moved from the original location or de-prioritized from search should give you pause if you thought about it a bit....
- tzs 3y ago> The fact that climate science was evolving 40 years ago is used to discount all the articles from the 70s that said we were entering a new ice age. The cooling predictions were that if levels of particulate pollution, which causes cooling, continued rising they way they were their cooling effect would be larger than the warming effect of greenhouse gases. We responded to the particulate pollution problem by massively reducing particulate emissions. With particulates no longer a significant factor the models of those that had predicted ice ages predicted warming.
