Atop an Underwater Hot Spring, an ‘Octopus Garden’ Thrives
- bicx 3y agoThis reminds me of the seeded octopus population in the science fiction novel Children of Ruin by Adrian Tchaikovsky.
- chrisweekly 3y agoYeah. Tchaikovsky's works do an amazing job of exploring and imagining the potential evolution of different kinds of intelligence based on non-human biology... entertaining and compelling stuff, highly recommended.
- adolph 3y agoThe idea for the song came about when Starr was on a boat belonging to comedian Peter Sellers in Sardinia in 1968. He ordered fish and chips for lunch, but instead of fish he got squid (it was the first time he'd eaten squid, and he said, "It was OK. A bit rubbery. Tasted like chicken.") The boat's captain then told Starr about how octopuses travel along the sea bed picking up stones and shiny objects with which to build gardens. Starr's songwriting was further inspired by his desire to escape mounting hostility among the Beatles; he would later admit that he had "just wanted to be under the sea, too". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octopus%27s_Garden https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octopus%27s_Garden

- delocalized 3y agoReally interesting, feels reminiscent of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octopolis_and_Octlantis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octopolis_and_Octlantis (my favorite non-human settlements, if they can be called that).
- atlantic 3y agoThese biologists seem impossibly naive. By putting this kind of information in the public domain, they are putting these creatures at risk of being commercially exploited in various ways. At the very least, the precise locations should not be divulged.
- deanCommie 3y agoI actually think you're completely right. The sea is too big, and existing international fisheries laws, not to mention simple national border laws have been unable to prevent massively irresponsible over-exploitation (to the point of extinction) of the creatures of the ocean. It happened with Soviet Whaling fleets. It's happening with Chinese fishery fleets.
- ChatGTP 3y agoDon’t worry, there will be AI fisherman in a few years , I’m sure they will work it out.

- riffic 3y agoI'd ask my friends to come and see an octopus' garden with me
