I felt that was a bad sign for the generative AI bubble anyway, that an enhanced Bing was being touted as one of the flagship products (around April iirc). It felt like a bad joke. It seems like gen AI has been able to shake off Bing without any reputation damage.
Personally I use chatGPT as a tool but I don't really see it as a complement for search as their uses are so different. Modern search imo is basically a smart web portal (1999 Yahoo style) as in I'm using it mostly to get something I know exists, not really discover something, but instead of having to click into something I can imprecisely enter a query to get it. So if I'm doing a search, I generally just want the site I'm looking for, not a summary or whatever.
Otoh, LLMs I use when I want a synthesis or explanation that I'm not expecting I can find on a website and would otherwise have to read a few things and put something together.
