I have heard about the high school thing from others from St. Louis (or people who have lived there.) I believe that is unique to St. Louis. In Chicago, we do ask what high school somebody went to, but more often than not it results in a good nature ribbing than anything else (kind of like the South side vs North side, all in good fun.)
