I recently picked up a cheap sewing machine to attempt to make some covers for a foam mattress I cut up to put in the back of a truck for camping. Sewing is super interesting and a little intimidating to get started with, but once you get the machine setup and start making some basic things it's really rewarding. I'm still very new to the world but I find myself inspecting every sewn thing I pick up -- backpacks, bathroom travel bags, pillowcases, clothing, etc. It re-orients your relationship to the construction of so many products that you take for granted. Everything that is sewn is up for repair or upgrades. It's a really cool hobby and if you have a tinkerers or DIY streak to you I highly suggest trying it out.
