Online dating was the best thing that ever happened to me. I was always too shy to talk to women at a bar, etc. But it was really easy to start messaging a woman online and setup a date. I ended up meeting my wife through a friend group...which started from a meetup.com group. I think another thing that many guys (I'm going to say guys, because I am one, and this is from my own experience) don't realize is that women in their early 20s are much different than women in their mid to late 20s. Shy, tech guys have a decent chance. But past experience may keep you thinking they have the same mindset as they did when they were 18.
