Zoom has nothing to do with the difficulty of trust building. Trust building is hard. That they aim at "trust building" as a justification at all signals to me that they may be of a particular personality type that gets a lot of leverage out of in person manipulative techniques that become non-feasible or downright legally dangerous over a medium that could result in a persisted recording.
Which jibes well with my experience of high level management types. There is a lot that can fly under the radar in person that when filtered through a screen makes it easier for even the socially awkward or anxious to muster a defense.
