Preventing software piracy with crypto-microprocessors (1980) [pdf]
- greggsy 3y agoThere was no chance of this getting off the ground in the early 80’s given how fluid the processor industry was. Things have stabilised somewhat, at least since the market accepted TPM 2.0 requirements for Windows 11. Nonetheless, software have capitalised on the ability to offload the key management problem to the cloud to perform online activation, which offers secondary benefits in terms of telemetry and subscription design. IMO, this is a much worse outcome than having to insert a USB license key, which was the norm for strong software licensing well into the early 2000’s.
