I had no idea that this effect was so noticeable: "the global positioning system (GPS) technology we rely on for navigation wouldn’t work if the satellites they use didn’t have clocks that account for the fact that time runs more slowly at the surface of Earth than it does at their position in orbit"

It’s metres of range. I think about 10-15m for the total of special and general relativity. Mostly special though

  Isn't it mostly general? Otherwise they'd have to speed the clocks up rather than slow them down.

I wonder if you could measure this even from sea level vs somewhere elevated a few thousand feet.
