I agree with the spirit of your comment, but I was curious about one detail — how could upvotes work on HN without JavaScript? Voting on a comment doesn't mutate the history stack, so it must work with JavaScript.
I had a look, and you can see the function which handles this on line 35 of this file:

- alpaca128 3y agoJS avoids a page reload, but it still works without JS. A lot of sites don't even load under those conditions.
