This is why I think it's so strange that Apple shows mounting an iPhone to a bike handlebar as an official use case in their latest watch presentation, where you can use the phone as a second display to show workout metrics from your watch. On one hand they tell you not to do it because it can break your phone, on the other hand they build features that assume you will do it anyway.

- dwighttk 3y agoA LOT less vibration on a bike handlebar vs a motorcycle
- porkbeer 3y agoNot the case. Motorcycles have good suspension compared to even high end bikes.
- bluepetegreen 3y agoYes the case. The camera-damaging vibration comes from the motor, not the road.
- dwighttk 3y agothank you. I was having trouble figuring out how to reply calmly
- o1y32 3y agoHow much is "a lot"? Enough that there is guarantee the camera won't be broken? Any numbers?
- pohl 3y agoThink of the rate of jostles. On a bicycle, the device will be perturbed when you hit a bump in the road. Worst case would be mountain biking, probably. On a motorcycle, without dampening, the perturbations would be measured in Hz, and imparted from the moment the engine starts, even while idling without going anywhere.
- chewmieser 3y agohttps://support.apple.com/en-us/102175 https://support.apple.com/en-us/102175 Apple calls out motorcycles specifically as being the problem. And also some other small engines but specifically calls out engines.
- ubermonkey 3y agoPeak HN right here. Motorcycles have motors. Motorcycles vibrate A LOT, cyclically, and constantly. It's FAR more of a thing than the mild jostling you'll get on a bicycle. I mean, just think about it.
- numpad0 3y agoI don't know, motorcycle engines can be designed to be well balanced and mounted on dampers. Meanwhile there are lots of bicycles without suspensions. Apples and oranges are both fruits with considerable fructose contents.
- dwighttk 3y agowhat are your roads like!?
- ubermonkey 3y agoI DO know. It's not comparable. Motorcycles vibrate significantly more than bicycles. Other people are telling you the same thing.
- stouset 3y agoMotorcycles vibrate. A lot. I’m guessing you’ve never been on one? Having ridden both extensively, comparing their vibration to that a bicycle is almost comical.
- yreg 3y agoThey also have an ad where it's mounted on an engine hood of a tractor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuOQdo7t3Xk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuOQdo7t3Xk
- bandergirl 3y agoA broken iPhone means two new sales (a replacement, and the broken phone won’t end up on the second hand market)
- lukev 3y agoIt only breaks the camera. The rest of the phone works fine. Plenty of market for that (albeit at a steep discount.) Also, it's a repairable issue. Happened to me and Apple fixed it quickly (covered by AppleCare+ in my case)
