I have a masters in computer science from Vienna University of Technology in Austria. This gives me the title “Diplom-Ingenieur” (diploma engineer) which according to Austrian law essentially becomes part of my name. I can (but don’t have to) add my title to my passport, drivers license etc. It’s also added in legal documents. To say I’m not allowed to call myself an engineer because my field is not rigorous enough just feels like a weird form of gate keeping.
