It is very illegal to own a gun if you are using drugs or engaged in criminal activity. Every time you pick up a firearm, you self-certify you are not a drug user or habitual criminal. If you “lie” about this, you get five years in federal prison. Obviously this is a quirk of the US legal system. We could replace firearms with a piece of pink cloth, or go full out second amendment and let school shooters keep their guns while in prison. But as it stands, that’s probably the best argument in favor of gun ownership.
