It was/is rougher than in the past, for sure. Connecting with recruiters, sending tailored resumes, and the whole process is legitimately taxing. (As a minor plug, I made a tool that takes care of the resume tailoring for me because I got so tired of doing it[0]) But on the whole, the strategy of applying, reaching out to the recruiter/hiring manager, and showing up with your interest has resulted in better outcomes, at least in my experience.
