I don't know a lot about Thiel, for the others this rings fairly true. I would possibly suggest that Musk might not be about self-aggrandizement for the sake of wanting to 'be the guy who did it' or statues. I always thought that his problem was he was trying to assert that he wasn't worthless. This is all armchair psych so grain-of-salt and all that, but it seemed to me most of his issues come from overreacting to criticism.
