Subheading: Will our own elites perform any better than the rulers of Chaco Canyon, the Mayan heartland, and Viking Greenland?
Shortly after:
> Although no contemporary written records remain to tell us how the ruling elites responded, the archaeological evidence suggests that they persisted in their traditional ways until disintegration became unavoidable.
So in other words, we don't know what their elites did. Doesn't this make the subheading nonsense?
> It’s obvious, in fact, that climate change is permanently altering our environment in an ever more disastrous fashion.
Is it obvious? Isn't it the subject of intense scientific research? Obvious would imply you can walk outside and just observe it as a lay person. If you could do that, we wouldn't need climate science as a field.
And I'm not denying climate change. This article just seems like it's taking advantage of peoples anxieties to harvest clicks.

Climate change is just one symptom of the overshoot of the environment's carrying capacity (planetary boundaries). > Is it obvious? Climate change, biodiversity loss and deforestation (land use change) are our biggest problems, I'd say. > This article just seems like it's taking advantage of peoples anxieties to harvest clicks No, it's just an early bird in the mass media.
