I wonder if they meant something different than embarrassing (I'm thinking emasculating but that's too strong). I work for myself, I wouldn't be embarrassed to work at a company but I think I'd hate it - not taking direction, you have to do that when you work for yourself, but all the other nonsense that destroys your agency. That's what is hard imo about going back to a "real" job.
