Introducing a predator has the effect of wiping out entire species.
These systems are too complex. It is impossible to predict the long term effects. The thinking here really blils down to the sentiment that Japanese pine beetle is killing the trees, how could things get any worse?
- spott 3y agoBiocontrol as a name covers everything from “swallowed a spider to eat the fly” to “introduce cane toads to kill cane flys” to “introduce bacteria that kills a specific species of mosquito and only that species” Australia has had a bunch of pretty good biocontrols done in recent years. Also, this unfortunately isn’t pine beetles… this is for Japanese beetles which love roses and other flowers.
