Service workers are underrated, and building media proxies proves it
- jauntywundrkind 3y agoIt's a bit stunning to me that most of the webdev energies seem focused around SSR right now. Service Workers have quietly helped lots of apps do crucial things, but so far there has been scant progress mainstreaming & bringing their benefit to the masses. They are a core part of no major frameworks. There seems like nothing more obvious for speeding up the web after the page loads than Service workers & web workers in general. Yet, well into a decade of having had web workers, it's still largely an artisanal handcraft set of technologies, with no major integrations with common frameworks & libraries. Commlink & others can ease their usage, but there's still effectively no architecure where business work is offloaded out of the main thread.
