I had a bout of gout recently for the first time in my life. The pain in my foot was beyond anything I've experienced. I couldn't drive, I bought a cane and hobbled with the side of my foot. I was miserable every hour I was awake, and was even woken up by it a few times. Thankfully it only lasted 10 days but it was incredibly eye opening.
