Making open source, transparent, auditable, voting machines that can be trusted to be secure and are more efficient than physical counting is a very interesting challenge. A challenge that I am sure politicians are not very interested in solving. Why spending so much to gain the trust of your citizens if most people know nothing about cryptography anyway?
