Elon Musk’s Shadow Rule

- anigbrowl 3y agoPlease do not post AI summaries on HN. Anyone in this community can do it by themselves, and it is no more helpful than copying and pasting search engine results on a topic.
- enslavedrobot 3y agoDisagree. I appreciate the summary. Keep it up.
- Obscurity4340 3y agoGood enslavedroBOT
- enslavedrobot 3y agoEverything and everyone that doesn't align with your thinking MUST be a bot.
- Obscurity4340 3y agoRelax guy, it was a cutesy reference to the "Good bot" meme and your username.
- enslavedrobot 3y agoMissed that... Powering down.
- Obscurity4340 3y agoAlso your comment redeemed you lol. Cutesy respects cutesy
- Obscurity4340 3y agoNo worries fam, just assume good faith/collegiality before malice. A lot of funny and clever folks here, grab a cuppa and stay awhile :)
- tkgally 3y agoThank you for the comment. That was the first time I have posted such a summary, and I wasn’t sure if I should or not. This was my thinking: The linked article is long and paywalled, and the title is provocative and possibly misunderstood. Rather than people commenting based only on the title and their prior views on the issue, I thought it might help to provide an objective summary of the article. An AI’s summary is likely to be more objective than one written by a person interested in the issue (including me). Claude 2 is, as far as I know, the only publically accessible LLM that can summarize such long articles, and it is currently available only to people in the U.S. and U.K. or with VPNs. I therefore decided to post that summary myself in the hope that it would lead to a more constructive discussion. Such a discussion hasn’t emerged yet, but that doesn’t seem to be because of the summary. In any case, there doesn’t seem to be consensus yet on whether AI summaries on HN are good or bad; my own AI summary has received both upvotes and downvotes. I'll drop a note to @dang and ask for his thoughts on the issue.
- tkgally 3y ago@dang kindly replied to me as follows: “[AI-generated summaries are] definitely discouraged. We haven't added it formally to the guidelines (mainly because I think it follows as a corollary, or maybe a lemma, from what's already there) but we want HN threads to be for curious conversation between humans, and have always discouraged autogenerated comments or even human-written summaries.”
- anigbrowl 3y agoThe best approach if you come across a paywalled article is to submit it to archive.org or some other archival site.

- enslavedrobot 3y agoLike it or not Tesla and spaceX are the only thing we've got to bring about the renewable energy transition and bring internet connectivity to the 2-3 billion people who don't have it. I work in clean tech and present solutions to government over and over. They never go with the obviously right choice, they go for the choice that makes their stakeholders happy. Next time you meet anyone in government ask them why roof top solar is more than 5x cheaper in Australia and how biofuels can be a long term solution to our energy needs.
- _2z1p 3y ago> It also highlights Musk's recent rightward political shift Why is this specifically called out as a problem? Single party rule is dangerous. There are merits of both left and right wing political philosophies, yet neither has all the answers. We should value political diversity as much as we do other forms of diversity (with the obvious exception of political extremists of either persuasion) and seek compromise and consensus whenever possible.
- sylware 3y ago"consolidating too much control in the hands of unelected business leaders"... Really ?? (irony) That's why we have aggressive regulation... if our "elected leaders" do their job, and that's not specific to the US only.

- NN88 3y agoWhy would Musk lie about talking to Putin? Surely, he must know that the NSA literally knows he's lying. It's the dumbest thing to lie about.

- ericzawo 3y agoWhat do you mean "who" reads this stuff? It's a long-form investigative piece in a prominent magazine. You may also be shocked to discover people read even longer works in their own dedicated medium called a "book".
