Like we half-jokingly say in telco industry wrt mobile carriers:
"Structural evolution in odd-numbered generations, business revolution in even-numbered generations."
- 1G was a fragmented mess of proprietary solutions: Structural evolution
- 2G standardized (alot of) it, brought SMS and later basic data: Business revolution beyond voice
- 3G ramped up data, but failed to deliver advanced communication like video or similar, but carriers realized that data traffic is the way to go: Structural evolution
- 4G brought high-speed data and lots of money, with use-case innovation mostly coming from outside the telco industry: Business revolution with everyone beyond carriers creating services
- 5G is now partly based on the assumption that there is an abundance of use-cases from everywhere, with lots of money to be made by the carrier just by having vast bandwidth available. But in reality that's actually more complicated and the infra is much more expensive. Carriers will have to learn and adapt, so (probably): Structural evolution
