An end to the reading wars? More US schools embrace phonics
- ggm 3y ago(I did read the article) -No the reading wars won't end. Because this was never about "settled science" it was about control of teaching and ideology behind teaching. "both sides" is huge in this because teachers and academics got sidelined by careerists who had tied their KPI to delivery of an outcome. Didn't matter which side you were on, if you engaged in this debate, outside of a classroom, you were in a fight divorced from the realities. What are, and were the realities? You use both phonics and whole-word. "it depends" Oh, if you want a related fun time, get into a pub conversation about "learning styles" which is almost universally junk science. Or Myers-Briggs. And like the phonics/whole-word debate, a lot of future outcomes for kids vests with somebody deciding to formalise, pen on paper "your kid has ADHD" or "your kid does not have ADHD" or "your kid is dyslexic" or "your kid is not dyslexic" -Decisions which go to which stream you can enter, what funding you can secure, how your kid is treated in class, by teaching staff and peers. I was incredibly lucky to co-raise a child who loves books and reads. My heart goes out to anyone who is fighting the problem when a kid doesn't like reading, or struggles with reading. It would be wrong to assume what worked for me works for anyone else here. I do believe starting reading with/to him, before he was lingual was key. By the time he could speak, books were a normal part of life.
