The dark side of using AI to design drugs
- ggm 3y agoAny scattergun design method in drugs will make fantastically toxic substances. The horror here, is somewhat confected because rational FDA mandated screening processes would detect and remove them. Also, "the emperor of maladies" makes it plain that cycotoxic substances are the bedrock of Cancer treatments these last 4-5 decades. They may be hateful but they were necessary until gene tooling got up to speed to do the cool things we do now. Maybe we're going to have to get used to machine-method drug design throwing out sarin from time to time, and then ask ourselves "ok: we found uses for Botulinus toxin (botox) for chronic spasm, what is it about sarin and other nerve agents that makes drug design s/w want to suggest them" -Unless of course they're just like common salt, too easy to make.
