The Lost City of Melbourne
- andrewstuart 3y agoI saw this movie. It's a tragic tale of how Melbourne was built in the 1880's gold rush and was a city of fabulous buildings and architecture. During the early to mid 20th century, Melbourne decided it was old and staid and not "modern" and started relentlessly knocking down the gorgeous old buildings built during the gold rush. Australia has always had a "cultural cringe", comparing itself to the rest of the world and feeling inferior and colonial. So in the 20th century there was a drive to make Melbourne "modern" like the rest of the world. Property developers went on a multi decade wrecking spree. Along the way Melbourne lost much of its fabulous gold rush era architecture. And in many (most?) cases the wrecked builds were replaced with nothing of any value, such as supermarkets or bland office towers. In the suburbs, Melbourne lost many of its most beautiful cinemas built during the height of the cinema boom. When television came along, the cinemas where seen as of no value and many of them wrecked, again to be replaced with things like carparks. If you live in Melbourne and find this stuff interesting and can find this movie at a cinema it is worth seeing.
