I still think Terrafork is a way better name.
Anyway, isn’t this just a matter of setting expectations at this point? Is this really shocking anymore?
I think the closing up of open source projects and products ought to be considered a normal part of the OSS lifecycle by now.
This manifesto should be just an SOP for consumers of OSS. Expect that at some point the project will be monitized and will need to be forked or you’ll need to pay for it.
Maybe even get ahead of the problem by forming a consortium or foundation when an open-source project reaches some arbitrary level of popularity. An organization that can help shepherd contributions in concert with from the commercial owner. A sort of OSS project consumers union.
Then, when the time comes, the project can be seamlessly forked and the open-source stream can be maintained without interruption or hurt feelings.
All OSS has tremendous value and it’s only ever a matter of time before some entity decides to turn all that intrinsic value into cold hard cash.
