I understand the fundamentals behind electric motors and why everyone can and does brag about HP/torque but I cant help wishing the range was 500 miles rather than the sporting 500 HP particularly on an SUV
- PaulHoule 3y agoWhat I imagine is that a smaller car would have better “fuel efficiency” in the sense of how much time it takes to charge. If you charged for 20 minutes with a particular charger I think the smaller car would be able to go further than a big car. As charging can be a PITA on road trips I think this would be a selling point, note https://jalopnik.com/ford-ceo-jim-farley-f-150-lightning-reality-check-1850739591 https://jalopnik.com/ford-ceo-jim-farley-f-150-lightning-rea... My nearby gas station recently replaced their gas pumps but they were exceptionally slow before and I would be resentful of people in line in front of me that needed many more minutes to fill a huge tank when I could fill my small tank much more quickly. It is a problem that the industry is refusing to make affordable electric cars and sales of electric cars are tailing off because the intersection of people who want electrics and who can afford luxury cars is not great. If US, European and Japanese carmakers won’t do it, Chinese carmakers will.
- yuppie_scum 3y agoHow frequently do you drive 500 miles without stopping? Remember, if you have a home plug you can leave the house with a “full tank of gas” every day. This will also gain access to the Tesla supercharger network when Honda switches to the NACS plug in a few years. It’s very easy in most populated parts of the country to do a road trip with the supercharger network. Stop for 20-30 minutes then get back on the road. (You might even be able to use it with the initial version’s CCS plug as Tesla has their two-plug super chargers starting to roll out.) If you really do drive more than 500 miles a day regularly, or you are in a sparsely populated area or have no home L2 charger, Evs are not for you yet and that’s fine. And despite the rhetoric out there, “they” aren’t going to force you to get one anytime soon.
- uberman 3y agoI almost never drive 500 miles in a day, but I coach a nationally competitive sports team and tournaments are frequently 250 to 300 miles from where i live. Even at 100 miles i would be uncomfortable to drive to the tournament without knowing that a level 3 charger was available and functional at my hotel. Is any home charger able to filling recharge a car overnight? My impression is that even level 2 home chargers really only keep relatively charged cars topped up.
