I lack the expertise in biology to take a position, but this situation appears heavily influenced by politics. At the time, they dismissed the idea of a lab leak as "impossible and ridiculous," possibly just to contradict Trump, despite the scarce information. Presently, with the US aiming for a Cold War-like relationship with China, it's become trendy to attribute blame to China, even though there's still insufficient evidence. I personally enjoyed COVID though. It completely changed the trajectory of my life (for the better).
