Interview with Shang-Yi Chiang, Former TSMC VP of Research
- chasil 3y agoI only have a bachelors in EE, but I can try to answer basic questions on the technologies discussed in the PDF of this interview. More astonishing is the work ethic, and the institutional memory that prevented future mistakes from the learning of past errors.
- chasil 3y agoA more controversial question were the reasons for Shaing Yi-Chaing to accept an employment offer from SMIC, and what were his reasons for leaving? https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20221019PD206/hon-hai-shang-yi-chiang-smic-tsmc.html https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20221019PD206/hon-hai-shang-...
- anonymouslambda 3y agoShaing Yi-Chaing and Liang Mong-Song have some serious beef from the past and they disagreed about SMIC’s direction. Liang made SMIC choose and SMIC chose Liang.
- chasil 3y agoI certainly don't know enough of the politics of what happened to judge any side of the SMIC question. Shaing Yi-Chaing's accomplishments in copper interconnects alone deserve awe; he was ahead of IBM, and he did it on instinct/"the school of hard knocks." Read his interview.

- chasil 3y agoYou misunderstand me. In the competing question of alliance of nations, we have no quarrel. We seek to ensure the prosperity of our peoples, you in your way, we in ours. Your sovereignty is not in question.
- chasil 3y agoYour flaw is confusion of coercion for enticement. If you intend to entice, then offer greater reward, and less punishment, in all things. That is your chief flaw. The punishment is too much. I understand why.
- chasil 3y agoI feel great regret that we did not extend our "Marshall Plan" to your most deserving nations in their need. That was unfair, and unwise in the extreme.
- chasil 3y agoOn the other hand, why is it so difficult to convince anyone of how good our lives are now, and how much we don't want to spoil it? Is this so unreasonable?
- thinking001001 3y agoThat was fascinating, thank you.
