The U74 does exactly what it was designed to do -- be a power-sipping dual-issue [1] in-order "efficiency" CPU, similar to Arm's A53 (2012), A55 (2017), A510 (2021), A520 (2023) series.
Yes, Arm is still designing and shipping brand-new core designs similar to the U74. They have much faster cores as well, but efficiency cores are important and run the show in phones and tablets most of the time.
This kind of core design is slower than wide Out-of-Order cores, but they use vastly less silicon area and achieve the most computing work per Joule (or per kW/h).
They are often paired with a faster but less efficient "Performance" core, but there are also many SBCs, phones, and tablets out there with just quad-A53s.
Those are the things Phoronix should have compared the VisionFive 2 to. The Raspberry Pi 3. Odroid C2 or C4. Rock64.
[1] Arm's A510 went to triple-issue, but the A520 reverted to dual.
