I'm surprised that more people don't mention bash tools, or gnu if that is the proper name for them. I edit more text files using a combination of ack-grep, cat, sed and pipes than my primary editor (Vim). I had a hard time understanding how one of my coworkers doesn't use a project-wide find (ack-grep, grep, find, &etc). One of my coworkers uses github's search for our repo. Bizarre, but works really well for him.
